To help manage health and safety you must control the risks in your workplace. To do this you need to consider what might cause harm to people and decide if you are taking reasonable steps to prevent harm.

This process is known as risk assessment and it is required by law. The risk assessment is about identifying sensible measures to control the risks in your workplace.

You are probable already taking steps to protect your employees, but risk assessments help you decide if you have covered all you need to.



Employers (and/or building owners or occupiers) must carry out a fire safety risk assessment, record these risk assessments and keep them up to date.

If you are in rented or shared space you still have a responsibility to your employees, you should make yourself familiar with and abide by the fire procedures that are in place.

This shares the same approach as health and safety risk assessments and can be carried out either as part of an overall risk assessment or as a stand alone exercise.



Manual Handling accounts for a third of all lost days at work and cost to the economy of approx. £6 Billion. Most of which is easily avoidable.

UK Health and Safety regulations require organisations to protect workers from the risks posed by substances that are hazardous to health.


The Control of Substances Hazard to Health (COSHH) regulations say you need to prevent or reduce workers exposure to hazardous substances. Part of this process involves completing an assessment of the risks associated with working with hazardous substances.

Machinery safety is covered by PUWER, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations.

PUWER places duties on people who own, operate or control any work equipment and machinery used in any workplace to select appropriate equipment for their operations and ensure that it is fit for use through appropriate inspection and maintenance regimes.

Regulation 6 of PUWER specifies the requirement to complete suitable inspection and maintenance on all work equipment. A PUWER inspection can be either visual or a full system check with an element of testing and must be carried out by a competent person.

The law says that every business must have a health and safety policy to manage your health and safety.


This policy policy sets out your general approach to health and safety. It explains how you, as an employer will manage health and safety in your business. It should clearly say who does what, when and how.


If you have five or more employees, you must write your health and safety policy down. If you have fewer than five employees you do not have to write anything down, however it is useful to do so.

You must share the health and safety policy, and any changes to it with your employees.

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 came into force for all industry sectors in Great Britain on 6 April 2006 (expect for the music and entertainment sectors, where they came into force on 6 April 2008).

The aim of the Noise Regulations is to ensure that workers' hearing is protected from excessive noise at their place of work.  


The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 came into force on 6 July 2005 and aim to protect workers from risks to health from Vibration.


The regulations introduce action and limit values for hand-arm vibration.
